A Eulogy...

I didn't even know you. You were a blur to me, both in the space of time, and with the velocity that moved your multi-directional, twitching body.
I am sure you had a name, or were known by some sound or other characteristic that we humans don't yet (and may never) understand.
I am sure that you were part of something, a family to be sure, a colony of some sort, or just a group.
I am sure that you were headed somewhere, as was I, when our paths crossed.
It was in this path that you met your untimely demise, and I went about my business, albeit much, much sadder.
For today, I took your life. I snuffed out what could have been a great existence. I saw you, and you saw me, but my right front tire was unforgiving.
I slowed down, I thought you were free and clear, and then, just as fast as you had entered my life, you changed directions, and headed straight for the plane where the rubber, as they say, meets the road. And it is on that plane that you still rest, but hopefully you felt no pain, and hopefully, you are somewhere much, much better.
While I did not know you personally, I knew your kind. To me, your kind are cute, furry little creatures who jump from tree to tree, searching for the finest acorn, and delivering us pleasure simply by being you.
But others do not share my view. Others think you are rodents, (and you are) but place you in the same category as rats or other nasty vermin. Some think you are pests, but not me. I never had a problem with you or your kind.
I am sorry that I took your life today, Little Squirrel. It made me sad. It made Megan sad. Jonah didn't see it, but I am sure if he did, and if he knew what was going on, he too would be sad. Josh was asleep. But that doesn't change the fact that I was saddened at your passing, even though I tried not to cause it.
Rest in peace, Little Squirrel, rest in peace.

Some of us save squirrels, some of us kill them. It all works out in the end. Well, not for the squirrel.
